Super Mario Triune Brain Introduction

Good Morning Internet!

Today, I will be discussing the recent announcement of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 video game. It will re-released on the nintendo switch and nintendo switch 2. I am super hyped to play Super Mario Galaxy 2 on a Gamecube controller! Also, the movie, Super Mario Galaxy will be dropping as well. It is coming out in April! Super close to my birthday, and my friends will hopefully join me to see a beautiful film. Perhaps we could run a few rounds of Galaxy while we are at it.

The Triune Brain in Super Mario Lore.

Okay, on to some fun topics. As you may be aware, I am interested in the allegory behind the Triune Brain theory and model. For those who are unaware of this topic, it is the idea that we have three general areas of the brain, the neocortexal system, the limbic system, and the r-complex. These three different levels provide different aspects to our consciousness. The neocortex deals with higher level thought like morality, right and wrong, developing systems, producing art, etc. It is generally divided into the right and left brain hemisphere. The left brain has to do with logical breakdowns and thoughts. The right brain has to do with creative energy and art. Generally, this is what makes us human, while some animals have the neocortex, the humans neocortex is the far more developed than other species.

The limbic system has to do with the emotional response in the individual. The R-Complex is a system designed for survival. It is also known as the limbic system. Many different historians theorize that religions had these idelogies and encoded them into scripture and symbolism. A prime example being the holy trinity, which includes the father (r-complex), Mother Mary/Spirit (Limbic System), and Jesus/Baby Figure (Neo-Cortex). I am here to say that these ideas have been brought forth in our culture as it is a good way to develop a story. If one was to encode these truths into media being produced than it would allow for people to relate to the art made.

Anyways, here is my breakdown. Super Mario is the Neocortex, Princess Peach is the Limbic System, and Bowser is the R-Complex or reptile brain. Think about it, this golden trio is all over the mushroom kingdom and is the man story of Super Mario. Mario is blue and red, which is symbolic to the fact the neo-cortex is right and left brained. The two hemispheres can be symbolically broken down in Mario’s colors, red and blue. Princess Peach represents the feminine emotional side of creation and Bowser (being base and unaware of morality) kidnaps princess peach away from Mario.

It is like a spiritual allegory told through media or in this case video games. The proper state (beginning of game, and after the game) is Mario united with Princess Peach, Bowser defeated. This is the mission of humanity. We should all thrive to suppress baser instincts so that we can transcend in evolution. Sure, the R-Complex has it’s place and I am sure that games like Super Paper Mario where Bowser is a member of your party could tell this story. Like if we use our neo-cortex to control our limbic system and our r-complex we could be a united trio internally becoming one human without cognitive dissonance. It would be a fun research project for sure, I would proceed in such studies for sure.

Anyways, quick recap as I am about to each breakfast with my friend out here. Okay, so we have a triune brain, since many in society fail to understand complex ideas, we can use allegory to explain topics. These creative solutions can help us to understand how the world world and the allegory of the triune brain is a great way for us to start the path of discover.
